Moto G Stylus 5G (2024) Design and Display
The Moto G Stylus 5G’s 2024 model features a redesigned structure. The rear panel is no longer made of plastic; it now features a vegan leather (silicone) surface that feels softer and is naturally less likely to slip from your hands or pocket. The frame remains plastic, so it doesn’t entirely feel premium overall.
The camera island appears as though the vegan leather is a bedspread delicately draped over it, tracing the borders. This is the identical style and method we observed in Motorola’s high-end Edge 50 series launched earlier this year. The island is larger than in the last generation, allowing it to accommodate the bigger lenses for the primary and ultra-wide cameras.
In terms of dimensions, the updated Moto G Stylus 5G is notably slimmer and lighter than the earlier model, featuring a thickness of 8.3mm and a weight of 190g, as opposed to the 9.2mm thickness and 202g weight of the G Stylus from 2023. It was once a harder phone to grasp, but I can confidently assert that the 2024 G Stylus 5G certainly feels more pleasant to hold with this adjustment. It remains a fairly large phone, though, with dimensions of 162.6mm x 74.8mm, comparable in height to the Galaxy A35 5G, yet about 3mm slimmer.
Naturally, I attempted to use the stylus as well, even though I’m not really a stylus person. I must admit that editing photos in Lightroom Mobile and jotting down notes during the day were likely two reasons that made me consider having a stylus phone. The one available appeared to meet my needs adequately, but I don’t believe it is suitable for other creative tasks, as it is not precisely
The Moto G Stylus 5G features a stunning display, which is one of its top attributes. (Image courtesy of PhoneArena) The screen of the Moto G Stylus 5G was already quite impressive, particularly with its 120Hz refresh rate. Nonetheless, it fell short regarding contrast and colors. Fortunately, this time Motorola has included an OLED display, swapping out the previous LCD from the earlier model.
The upgraded display appears markedly improved, as one would anticipate when transitioning to OLED. I enjoyed watching videos and even a few Netflix shows during my commute to and from work. I was somewhat surprised by the visibility of the 2024 G Stylus screen outdoors, so kudos to Motorola for boosting the brightness.
The bezels are generally consistent, with the lower one being somewhat thicker. While it may not possess the flawless premium appearance of top-tier smartphones, currently all bezels are sufficiently slim to be visually acceptable, at least according to my criteria.
Moto G Stylus 5G (2024) Camera
The 2024 Moto G Stylus 5G retains its 50MP main camera, but now incorporates optical image stabilization (OIS). A new 13MP ultrawide camera replaces the previous 8MP version and includes a Macro Vision mode for macro photography.
Unfortunately, recording at 4K 30FPS is no longer possible, unlike the 2023 model of the phone. The top resolution available is 1080P, with an utmost frame rate of 120FPS (for slow-motion effect). This is somewhat disappointing, but phones of this kind aren’t particularly adept at 4K video (not yet, at least), so I can overlook that aspect—might as well focus on what’s genuinely high-quality performance.
Sure, I’ll concede that the ultrawide camera on the new G Stylus isn’t exceptional, but I would argue that the photos it produces are indeed practical. It appears to reveal the highlights better, having difficulty revealing more detail in the shadows, leading to a darker image, yet—still—not too bad.
In contrast, the primary 50MP camera is significantly more remarkable. In addition to the vibrant screen of the 2024 G Stylus, the main camera’s image quality also impressed me. Images appear quite crisp without excessive post-processing. The 2X crop mode also yielded sharp images.
To me, colors from the primary camera seemed true to life, and the HDR performance appears satisfactory, although the shadows remain excessively dark for my preference, causing some dimmer regions to look nearly black.
An additional surprising aspect was the pictures captured using the Macro mode. You can’t approach the subject very closely due to a longer minimum focusing distance, yet the images you can capture
Moto G Stylus 5G (2024) Performance & Benchmark
The Moto G Stylus 5G is rather underwhelming in terms of performance. (Image courtesy of PhoneArena)
Motorola has chosen to equip the 2024 G Stylus 5G with the identical Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chipset (launched in 2022) that was present in the 2023 version. I believe this was a method to maintain the same price as last year, enabling the various other enhancements apparent in its specifications.
Even with its somewhat outdated low-end chipset, the 2024 Moto G Stylus performed fairly well during my daily usage. It managed mobile gaming well, although a few had to be adjusted in settings. More demanding applications like Lightroom Mobile and CapCut were also functional. I didn’t appreciate the occasional stutter when navigating the UI or using the camera, particularly for a phone priced at $400.
The bright side is that the lag occurred infrequently and did not arise when utilizing the system’s stylus capabilities, which are what truly distinguish this phone.
You now receive 8GB of RAM instead of the previous 6GB. The storage scenario remains unchanged, featuring 256GB of internal storage and the possibility to expand that storage with a microSD card (up to 2TB).
Moto G Stylus 5G (2024) Battery
The 2024 model of the Moto G Stylus 5G boasts impressive battery longevity! It took me two days to bring it down below 10%, which was expected after seeing its rank compared to all the other phones we have tested thus far. It holds the 4th position!
A significant factor contributing to its extended battery life is the impressive 5,000 mAh capacity, paired with the modest chipset within. I experimented extensively with the camera and played some simpler mobile games like Wild Rift, which the phone handled smoothly (at least on medium settings), and it still had plenty of battery left after the first day.
